When we got to the bus station, we were forty-five minutes early. I still don’t know if it was a blessing or a curse. A blessing because I could spend forty-five minutes more with you or a curse because in those forty-five minutes, I had to watch you cry and beg me not to go. We both knew I had to go, though, because for now our lives are apart, even if we so badly want them to be together. Even if the constant traveling back and forth doesn’t feel right anymore, even if staying is all I want to do. The bus arrived, and I felt your hand tighten around mine, a tether between my heart and yours. It doesn’t get easier to say goodbye; those words are poison on my lips, and “see you soon” doesn’t suffice because we never know how soon “soon” will be. All I have is my love for you, how you light up every deep and dark corner of my soul.
